Travis Moschak, Ph.D.
Principal Investigator
Dr. Travis Moschak is a behavioral neuroscientist whose research focuses on understanding the neurocircuitry underlying motivation, decision-making, and addiction. His work explores how substances of abuse and natural rewards affect brain function, particularly emphasizing operant behavioral paradigms. Dr. Moschak's laboratory uses advanced techniques such as in vivo electrophysiology and pharmacology to investigate the role of specific brain regions in driving these behaviors. Through his studies, he aims to uncover mechanisms that contribute to substance use disorders, with the ultimate goal of identifying potential therapeutic targets.

Karla Galvan, M.S.
Lab Manager
Karla is the Laboratory Manager for the Moschak Lab at UTEP, where she oversees daily operations and supports ongoing research projects. Karla previously completed her master’s degree in the same lab, where her thesis focused on neuronal activity in the prelimbic cortex during behaviors predictive of drug addiction. Karla’s research interests center on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying motivation and addiction-related behaviors. Outside the lab, she volunteers at a rehabilitation center that uses horses to work with children with special needs, as well as at El Paso Children’s Hospital. Karla plans to pursue a career in medicine, combining her research background with a commitment to patient care. -
Angelica Romero
Lab Technician
Angelica is a recent graduate from UTEP's Neuroscience B. S. Program and is now excitedly diving deeper into exploring the world of science in order to figure out whether she wants to pursue a career in research or in medicine. Apart from her work in this wonderful lab, she also spends her time as a research assistant for Dr. Serafine's Psychology lab. Angelica's free time is dedicated to the performing arts, where she participates in the Sun City's very own Allure Independent, a competitive winterguard team, and had spent her university years giving school spirit with the UTEP Diamonds colorguard team, spinning and dancing alongside the Marching Miners! Angelica loves broadening her knowledge, as well as imagination, by reading books, watching anime, listening to music, crocheting, and hanging out with friends (especially when food is involved).

Marina Smoak
Ph.D. Candidate
Marina is a Ph.D. student in what she proudly calls the best lab in the world. Passionate about her work, she’s constantly seeking to expand her expertise, learn new skills, and grow into the best version of herself. Outside the lab, Marina enjoys lifting at the gym, practicing yoga, cooking, crafting, spending time with loved ones, getting tattoos, or relaxing with a good book and a coffee in a cozy spot.

Peter Fogel
Ph.D. Candidate
Peter is a Ph.D. student interested in how social factors influence the decision-making process within the context of addiction. Apart from research, Peter loves to sing, dance, and perform in musical theatre productions, enjoys both learning and creating new dishes in the kitchen, and (tries to) bike and run regularly.
